There is actually a chance you can save your stuff. Happened to me years ago with a Dell pc I had. Try getting a new HD, then place your old one as a secondary disk and boot your pc with the new one (assuming it has an operational system). You might have a chance to save stuff from your old drive. At least I was able to.
Now to find out how to OS

are you sure it's actually the HD that failed? I had a macbook die from a sudden case of water, but I could just take out the HD, plug it into an adapter thing from a western digital external disk and plug that into another computer and everything was intact
I figured out I could go through my HD, but cant touch anything, just view file names, etc.
So my files look safe, must be something wrong with the OS
